Cranio Sacral Therapy

Cranio Sacral Therapy is a subtle and profound healing form. It was developed from the work of an American osteopath, Dr William Sutherland in the early 1900s. Sutherland discovered intrinsic movements of the bones in the head and his further research revealed different rhythms in the body. He inferred, from further observation, and later went on to demonstrate to his satisfaction, that these movements are inextricably linked with mental and emotional health and that restriction of these movements corresponds to a reduction of the natural capacity to self-heal.

Cranio Sacral Therapy has developed from clinical experience, which shows that health is something active and not just an absence of disease. Health is the expression of life, responsible for the organisation of the millions of things that are constantly happening in the body.

In a typical Cranio Sacral Therapy session, you will usually lie (or sometimes sit) fully-clothed on a treatment couch. The therapist will make contact by placing their hands lightly on your body and tuning into the different structures and their subtle rhythms, in order to identify areas of health or restriction/inertia. The presence, deep ‘listening’ and support of the therapist helps to facilitate a natural healing process, wherever it is needed.

Treatments follow the innate wisdom, needs and priorities of the body. Old restrictions, holding patterns or tensions start to dissolve, the muscles and internal organs begin to let go and relax, and the bones of their head and spine start to realign. As the body starts to relax and release its holding patterns, the cerebro-spinal fluid, blood and lymph are able to flow more freely, the central nervous system and internal organs begin to function more optimally and health is gradually restored to the whole person.

The first thing clients usually notice during a treatment is a sense of deep relaxation, peace and relief, which will generally last throughout the session and beyond. This release of tension often extends into everyday life. Sometimes the benefits are not immediately noticeable but become obvious on returning to a familiar environment.

Cranio Sacral Therapy is gentle yet powerful, and often deeply moving and exhilarating. Treatments can lead to improved physical and mental health, a greater sense of wellbeing and balance, and increased self-awareness and understanding – enabling the client to have greater control over their health and wellbeing.
